Zambia launched an oral cholera vaccination campaign on Friday targeting the capital, Lusaka, and Chibombo District in Central Province, the areas affected by the current outbreak. More than 500,000 vaccine doses will be distributed in the first phase, with another 480,000 doses expected to arrive soon for other affected areas.
Health Minister Roma Chilengi said the campaign aims to protect people in the hardest-hit communities and make efficient use of limited vaccine supplies. The outbreak has spread to 12 districts across five provinces, with Zambia recording 966 cases and 25 deaths, including 43 new cases in the past 24 hours.
