Young people in Taipei held a protest against Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks on Taiwan and what they viewed as Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te’s overly friendly stance toward Japan. Protesters, many from Taiwan’s New Party, said Takaichi was raising tensions and risking dragging Taiwan into conflict, while accusing Lai and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of ignoring domestic issues such as rising living costs, fraud, and child safety. They also criticized the government for focusing on defense spending instead of addressing public concerns. Protesters said most young people want to avoid war and oppose both the DPP and external forces escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
