Xu Shiyan, 27, captain of the Chinese women’s national judo team, finished fifth in the women’s +78-kilogram event at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, promising to return stronger. Initially a rising star, her Olympic performance dented her confidence. In 2022, during overseas training, she struggled and doubted herself, facing a performance bottleneck.
The Chinese national team’s coaching changes, moving from Chinese to French and now Georgian coaches, benefited Xu. Her stamina was her strength, but she needed more scoring techniques. Her coaches helped her develop new skills and advised patience. Her persistence paid off, earning her multiple medals in 2023, despite recent inconsistencies.
Determined to improve, Xu focuses on maintaining good physical and mental form. With clearer goals for the Paris Olympics, she aims for nothing less than gold.
