August 15 is China’s National Ecology Day. It was established last year to raise awareness about protecting the environment.
On this day in 2005, Xi Jinping, then secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee, visited Yucun Village in Zhejiang Province. There, he saw that the village had closed three limestone quarries and a cement factory, which had made up 95% of their income. Xi praised the village’s choice and introduced the idea that “green mountains and clear waters are just as valuable as mountains of gold and silver.”
