Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to being a part of the Global South and the developing world during a video speech at the 60th anniversary celebration of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Xi highlighted UNCTAD’s contributions over the past six decades in promoting South-South cooperation, North-South dialogue, and advocating for a new international economic order.
In his address, Xi called for global efforts to build a community with a shared future, emphasizing the need for true multilateralism, an equal and orderly multipolar world, and adherence to the UN Charter. He urged the enhancement of economic globalization that is universal and inclusive, and stressed the importance of addressing developmental imbalances for more equitable global governance.
Xi also underscored the need to harness opportunities in innovation and development, advocate for a non-discriminatory digital economy, improve AI governance within the UN framework, and support green transitions. Marking the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Xi reiterated China’s commitment to high-quality development and its role in the Global South, pledging to expand imports from developing countries and strengthen cooperation to advance the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
