Xi Jinping, the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing to discuss cross-Straits relations. Xi emphasized the shared heritage of the Chinese nation, spanning over 5,000 years, and stressed that people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are Chinese, with no issues that cannot be resolved through dialogue. He asserted that despite differences in systems, both sides belong to one China, and external interference cannot impede reunification. Xi urged youth from both sides to embrace their Chinese identity and work towards the nation’s prosperity.
Ma echoed Xi’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence” for peaceful cross-Straits development. He highlighted the shared bloodline, culture, and history of people on both sides, advocating for deeper exchanges, cooperation, and joint efforts towards the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
