Xi Jinping hails New Development Bank as ‘pioneer’ of Global South self-improvement

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai on Tuesday and met with its president, Dilma Rousseff. He congratulated her on being re-elected and praised the bank as the first global development institution created and led by developing countries.

Xi said the NDB is a key step in bringing emerging countries together and fits the global trend of improving international systems. He mentioned that BRICS cooperation (between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) is now moving into a new stage of strong growth.

He encouraged the bank to focus on the needs of developing countries, offering affordable and eco-friendly financing for infrastructure. He also urged the bank to support green technology, close the digital gap, and help these countries shift to low-carbon development.

Xi said the NDB should speak up for developing nations in global finance reform and protect their rights. He promised that China, as the host country, will continue to support the bank and work with it on sustainable and innovative projects. China is also open to sharing its own development experience with other member countries through the bank.
