Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed condolences following a deadly residential building fire in Hong Kong’s Tai Po area, which has killed at least 14 people, including a 37-year-old firefighter. Xi requested immediate updates on rescue efforts and asked the Central Government’s Liaison Office to convey his sympathies to Chief Executive John Lee, the victims’ families, and affected residents.
He instructed the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Liaison Office to fully support the Hong Kong SAR government in extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped individuals, treating the injured, and providing assistance. Xi also called on relevant departments to offer all necessary support to reduce casualties and losses.
The Hong Kong SAR government has activated its emergency response mechanism, and the Liaison Office has formed a task force to coordinate with local authorities. The fire, reported at 2:51 p.m., intensified and was raised to a No. 5 alarm level at 6:22 p.m., with rescue operations still in progress.
