Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger efforts to promote balanced regional development and advance common prosperity across the country.
In recent instructions on China’s east-west cooperation program, Xi said the initiative has played an important role over the past 30 years in reducing poverty and narrowing regional development gaps. He described it as an example of the Communist Party of China’s political strengths and the advantages of China’s socialist system.
Xi said 2026, the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan, marks a new stage for poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. He urged eastern and western regions to deepen cooperation through industrial partnerships, talent exchanges, technology sharing and mutual learning in governance.
He also called on local governments to strengthen long-term assistance mechanisms, prevent any large-scale return to poverty and make steady progress in rural revitalization.
A national conference on east-west cooperation was held on Wednesday in Yinchuan, where Vice Premier Liu Guozhong emphasized expanding cooperation in areas including industry, employment, science and technology, finance, and professional exchanges.
