Wushu set to make historic Olympic debut at 2026 Dakar Youth Games

A send-off ceremony was held in Beijing on Tuesday to mark Wushu’s historic debut as an official medal sport at the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympics in Senegal. The Games will open on October 31, with Wushu competitions scheduled for November 1 to 3. A total of 48 athletes from 47 countries and regions are expected to compete for four gold medals in men’s and women’s Changquan and Taijiquan combined events.

International Wushu Federation Secretary-General Zhang Yuping said the sport’s inclusion marked an important milestone in its international development and reflected recognition of its value by the International Olympic Committee. Wushu previously featured at the 2008 Beijing Wushu Tournament alongside the Summer Olympics, but without official medal status. The Dakar Games will be the first official Olympic event to award medals in Wushu.
