Explorers have discovered the wreck of Ernest Shackleton’s last ship, Quest, off the coast of Labrador, Canada, 62 years after it went missing. The ship was found under 390 meters of water, with its broken mast lying beside it. The Quest, a schooner-rigged steamship, was initially purchased by Shackleton for travel to Canada’s High Arctic. Shackleton’s death aboard the ship in 1922 marked the end of the “heroic age” of Antarctic exploration. After his death, the Quest was used for Arctic research and later as a sealing vessel before it sank in 1962 due to ice damage. The ship will not be raised due to the high cost, but it will be documented and studied. Shackleton, who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, never achieved his goal of crossing Antarctica via the South Pole and died at 47 during his fourth expedition.
