The world’s most powerful digital camera has captured its first detailed images of space, marking the start of a decade-long cosmic survey by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. The inaugural images feature vibrant views of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulas and the Virgo Cluster, showcasing stars and galaxies in striking clarity.
Funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and Department of Energy, the observatory will scan the southern sky over the next 10 years, aiming to image 20 billion galaxies and search for new celestial bodies. Named after astronomer Vera Rubin, the project is dedicated to exploring the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy.
