World leaders called for stronger international cooperation and oversight of artificial intelligence during the UN General Assembly’s general debate on Tuesday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged countries to create a global AI risk management framework with independent oversight, while warning that technology without accountability could create serious risks.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would encourage AI development rather than support global controls, while aiming to keep the technology safe. French President Emmanuel Macron called for countries to build their own AI capabilities and strengthen their ability to audit AI systems. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for stronger regulation of major technology companies and AI.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung highlighted concerns that AI could increase inequality if its benefits are not shared fairly. He said South Korea plans to establish a global AI hub to promote international cooperation and use AI to address issues such as climate change, health and food security. The UN Security Council is also scheduled to discuss AI and international security.
