Hundreds of pro-choice demonstrators gathered at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., on a frigid Saturday, asserting that not only reproductive freedom but democracy itself is at stake in the United States. The Women’s March protests, occurring in various states, aimed to galvanize voters for the 2024 elections, secure abortion access, and counter far-right extremism. The demonstration in D.C. followed Friday’s March for Life, where anti-abortion campaigners called for the complete elimination of the procedure. Some pro-choice demonstrators engaged in verbal clashes with counter-protesters. With the Roe v. Wade anniversary approaching on January 22 (the 1973 ruling that granted abortion rights but was overturned in 2022), Women’s March organizers declared their movement as “Bigger than Roe” and pledged to unseat any politician threatening the well-being and futures of women in the United States.
