Wildfires kill firefighters as blazes spread across Europe

Wildfires continue to spread across southern Europe, with France, Greece and Türkiye facing severe blazes fueled by extreme heat and strong winds. In France’s Gironde region, the country’s largest wildfire remained uncontained as temperatures neared 40 degrees Celsius, forcing thousands more people to evacuate. In Greece, three firefighters died while battling separate wildfires, while Türkiye evacuated a hospital and closed highways as fires spread in southwestern provinces. Spain has seen some improvement, with thousands of residents allowed to return home, though several areas remain under evacuation orders as another heatwave approaches.
