When runners competed alongside humanoid robots in a half-marathon at Beijing’s Yizhuang innovation park last April, the event highlighted China’s rapid advances in frontier technology. On Monday, President Xi Jinping visited the same park during his first domestic inspection tour of the year, underscoring the importance of scientific self-reliance.
Xi toured technology displays and met with researchers and business leaders, stressing that strength in science and technology is key to building a modern socialist country. The Yizhuang park hosts more than 1,000 companies and focuses on sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum information and 6G communications, forming a major innovation hub.
The visit aligns with China’s broader strategy to build international science and technology centers in key regions, including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta and the Greater Bay Area. Recent achievements in space exploration, high-speed rail, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing have strengthened China’s global innovation standing, with the country entering the top 10 of the 2025 Global Innovation Index.
As China prepares for its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), innovation and technological self-reliance are being positioned as central drivers of future development.
