The World Health Organization (WHO) emergency committee will meet virtually on Wednesday at 10 a.m. GMT to decide if the Mpox outbreak in several African countries warrants its highest alert level. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the committee will assess whether the outbreak is a public health emergency of international concern and provide recommendations on controlling and reducing the disease’s spread.
Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is an infectious disease transmitted by infected animals and through close human contact. It causes symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and skin lesions. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently the hardest hit, with 14,479 confirmed and suspected cases and 455 deaths as of August 3, according to the African Union’s health agency.
