The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for stronger global surveillance of bird flu after a child in the U.S. tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza. WHO officials highlighted the rising number of outbreaks in birds and mammals since 2020, which has led to tens of millions of poultry deaths. Human infections remain rare and mild, with 55 cases reported in the U.S. in 2024, mostly linked to animal exposure. WHO emphasized the need for better monitoring, protective measures, and preparation for a potential flu pandemic, although no human-to-human transmission has been detected so far.
