On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), citing its potential for widespread international transmission. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced this decision after the emergency committee’s advice. Mpox cases this year have surpassed last year’s total, with over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported.
The declaration follows an earlier public health emergency announcement by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The European Union plans to donate 175,420 doses of MVA-BN vaccines to Africa, and Bavarian Nordic will contribute 40,000 doses.
