WHO classifies JN.1 strain as variant of interest

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a distinct variant of interest separate from the BA.2.86 lineage due to its rapidly increasing spread. However, the WHO states that the additional global public health risk posed by JN.1 is currently considered low. Existing vaccines remain effective in protecting against severe disease and death caused by JN.1 and other circulating variants of COVID-19. The WHO recommends individuals to take preventive measures, including wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, practicing social distancing, and improving ventilation, to reduce the risk of infection and severe illness.
