South Korean investigators arrested impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on Wednesday during their second attempt to execute an arrest warrant, marking the first time a sitting president has been taken into custody. Yoon was detained at 10:33 a.m. after a brief standoff with security forces. He appeared for questioning to prevent further conflict, calling the investigation “illegal.”
The investigation focuses on allegations including emergency martial law declarations, arrests of political figures, and efforts to paralyze the National Assembly. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) has 48 hours to decide whether to extend Yoon’s detention for up to 20 days. Analysts suggest Yoon may use his legal expertise to challenge the accusations, while public support for his impeachment remains strong. A constitutional court verdict on his impeachment could be reached by mid-March.
