Washington, D.C., has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment of National Guard troops in the city, citing violations of local autonomy and the Home Rule Act. Attorney General Brian Schwalb called the deployment “unlawful” and said it undermines basic freedoms and harms the city’s economy.
The lawsuit comes after President Trump’s August 11 executive order sent 800 National Guard troops to D.C., with six Republican-led states contributing additional personnel, raising the total to over 2,000. The move follows a similar legal challenge in California, where a court ruled earlier this week that deploying soldiers for civilian law enforcement violated federal law.
The Trump administration defended the deployment, saying it has helped reduce violent crime in the district.
