Wang Yi highlights friendship, shared interests in meeting with South Korean envoy

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on Sunday with Park Byeong-seug, the special envoy of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, as the two countries marked the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic ties. Wang highlighted the importance of consolidating friendship, expanding shared interests, and managing differences to ensure long-term stability in relations. He noted that President Xi Jinping and President Lee had already set the direction for advancing the strategic cooperative partnership in an earlier phone call.

Wang also linked the meeting to wider historical and regional themes, stressing that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of both China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the liberation of the Korean Peninsula. He said China is ready to work with South Korea to uphold the legacy of WWII, strengthen cooperation at the UN, safeguard free trade, and resist protectionism.

Park delivered a letter from President Lee to Xi Jinping, reaffirming South Korea’s respect for the one-China principle and commitment to closer ties. He said Seoul seeks to deepen cooperation in trade, education, and youth exchanges, step up high-level contacts, and put the bilateral strategic partnership back on track while contributing jointly to regional peace and prosperity.
