Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with officials from several countries in China Hong Kong on Friday during the signing ceremony for the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).
Wang emphasized that the IOMed—initiated by developing countries—offers a new platform for peaceful dispute resolution through dialogue and upholds international law and the UN Charter. He said the organization supports multilateralism, global fairness, and better protects the interests of smaller nations.
Leaders from Benin, Pakistan, Switzerland, Nepal, Laos, and others welcomed the initiative. Benin pledged to ratify the agreement quickly; Pakistan expressed support and said it would upgrade diplomatic ties with Afghanistan; Switzerland and Laos praised IOMed’s potential for peaceful conflict resolution. Nepal noted that China Hong Kong was an ideal location for its headquarters.
The IOMed is the world’s first intergovernmental legal body focused specifically on mediation.
