Wang Yi: China encourages Iran, US to return to Islamabad MoU

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday, calling on Iran and the United States to remain calm, exercise restraint and return to negotiations based on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. China said the continued conflict is not in the interests of the region or the wider international community and offered to help facilitate dialogue.

Wang also called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened quickly to protect international shipping, energy supplies and global supply chains. China urged countries to avoid further expanding tensions into Yemen and the Red Sea and said the Middle East needs a stronger regional security framework.

Araghchi said Iran does not want the conflict to continue and is willing to return to diplomatic channels while protecting its interests. He said Iran considers the existing US-Iran MoU valid, has agreed with Oman on a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and welcomed China’s role in promoting regional peace.

The talks also highlighted the close relationship between China and Iran, with both sides expressing support for deeper cooperation and continued communication on regional and international issues.
