Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Thursday that a ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities in the Middle East are essential for ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and represent the shared appeal of the international community. Wang made the remarks during a phone conversation with Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, addressing both the Middle East situation and China-EU relations.
Kallas acknowledged China’s diplomatic efforts to ease tensions, including the recent five-point initiative jointly issued by China and Pakistan aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf region. She stressed the EU’s support for de-escalation, resumption of dialogue, and UN-led humanitarian measures to protect civilians and non-military targets, while ensuring the strait remains open to navigation.
Wang reiterated China’s stance that the five-point initiative reflects broad international consensus, focusing on halting hostilities, initiating peace talks, safeguarding non-military targets and shipping lanes, and upholding the UN Charter. He warned that UN Security Council actions should not provide legal cover for unauthorized military operations or escalate conflicts. Wang also highlighted the importance of China-EU cooperation in promoting peace and restoring regional stability.
On bilateral ties, Wang stressed that China’s development presents opportunities for Europe, noting that protectionism and attempts to decouple from China would limit access to these opportunities. Kallas affirmed that the EU views China as an important partner and does not seek decoupling, expressing interest in continued dialogue and collaboration with China.
