Vucic resigns as president of Serbia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned from office after submitting his written resignation to the National Assembly on Sunday. Under Serbian law, his resignation takes effect once it is formally received by parliament, without requiring a separate approval. Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will take over presidential duties for up to three months and is required to call a presidential election during that period.
Vucic said he would still take part as an ordinary citizen in the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25. The parliament was dissolved on September 9, while the government will continue its duties until a new government is formed. The Serbian Progressive Party had previously nominated Vucic to lead its electoral list and as its candidate for prime minister. After the election, the acting president will propose a prime minister, whose government program and cabinet must be approved by a majority of lawmakers.
Vucic, born in Belgrade in 1970, previously served as defense minister, deputy prime minister and prime minister before becoming president in 2017. He was re-elected in 2022. Serbia’s constitution limits presidents to two five-year terms.
