Vietnam and the European Union have officially upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership during European Council President Antonio Costa’s visit to Hanoi. This milestone framework aims to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, digital transformation, and security. While Vietnam has thrived as a global export hub, the government is actively diversifying its markets to reduce reliance on the U.S. and mitigate international concerns regarding its trade surplus.
President Luong Cuong emphasized that economic and investment ties remain the primary engine of this evolving relationship. Under the new partnership, both sides intend to leverage their 2020 free trade agreement to drive sustainable development and green energy transitions. This strategic shift supports Vietnam’s long-term goal of achieving high-income status by 2045 while strengthening its role in multilateral cooperation.
