Venus Williams is making her return to professional tennis after more than a year away, set to compete at the Citi Open in Washington. The 45-year-old expressed excitement about her comeback but said what would make it even better is if her younger sister Serena Williams joined her on the tour again. Serena, 43, hasn’t played since the 2022 U.S. Open and has spoken about “evolving” away from tennis, though she recently practiced briefly with Venus.
Venus highlighted Serena’s natural talent and noted their lifelong connection to the sport. Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, last played in March 2024 and is currently listed as “inactive” on the WTA Tour website. Her wildcard entry to the Citi Open surprised many fans and officials, with tournament chairman Mark Ein praising Venus as an icon on and off the court. Venus described her return as very special and a bit of a surprise for fans.
