The U.S. Treasury Department, State Department and Federal Housing Finance Agency are ending all use of AI products from Anthropic after President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to cut ties with the company, including its Claude platform. The Pentagon said it would designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk, with a six-month phase-out planned for the Defense Department and other agencies.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the department would stop using Anthropic tools, while the housing agency said Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would do the same. The State Department will replace Anthropic’s model in its internal chatbot with GPT-4.1 from OpenAI.
The move marks a significant setback for Anthropic and comes amid broader tensions over AI guardrails. Separately, OpenAI announced a deal to deploy its technology within the Defense Department’s classified network.
