US sanctions ICC president, senior lawyer

The Trump administration has imposed financial sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane and Senior Trial Lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, escalating U.S. opposition to the Hague-based tribunal. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the court of illegally asserting authority over nationals from non-member nations—such as the U.S. and Israel—that have not ratified the Rome Statute. The sanctions block the two officials from accessing the U.S. financial system and prohibit Americans from conducting transactions with them. Tensions between Washington and the ICC have intensified following the tribunal’s 2024 arrest warrants for top Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
