US raises wildfire preparedness to highest level as fires strain national resources

The United States has raised its national wildfire preparedness level to the highest Level 5 as dozens of large fires continue to overwhelm firefighting resources.

The National Interagency Coordination Center reported 73 uncontained large wildfires across the country, with more than 17,600 firefighters and support personnel deployed. The Northwest region is currently the hardest hit, with major fires threatening homes, infrastructure and forcing evacuations in parts of Oregon and Washington.

So far this year, wildfires have burned around 15,600 square kilometers across more than 20 states — about 33% above the 10-year average. Authorities are warning that hot, dry and windy conditions could fuel further fire activity in the coming days.
