A series of joint US-Japan military exercises in southwestern Japan has sparked protests from local residents and raised concerns about regional stability.
The drills include the Resolute Dragon exercise in Kyushu and Okinawa, the deployment of the US Typhon missile system to Kagoshima Prefecture, and Japan’s participation in the multinational RIMPAC naval exercise.
Critics argue the exercises and missile deployment could increase tensions with neighboring countries and accuse the Japanese government of ignoring local opposition. Some analysts say Japan is expanding its military capabilities and strengthening cooperation with the US, while opponents warn this could undermine regional peace and security.
