US, Iran clash at UN as Guterres warns of rising nuclear risks

At the opening of the 11th NPT Review Conference in New York, the United States and Iran exchanged sharp accusations regarding Tehran’s appointment as a conference vice president. U.S. official Christopher Yeaw condemned the selection as an “affront” to the treaty, citing Iran’s alleged lack of cooperation with the IAEA. In response, Iranian Ambassador Reza Najafi dismissed the claims as politically motivated, criticizing the U.S. for modernizing its own arsenal and modernizing nuclear threats. Amidst these tensions, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of rising nuclear risks and “collective amnesia” regarding the dangers of atomic weapons, urging all nations to prioritize disarmament.
