US ICE agent fatally shoots driver in Maine, six days after similar death in Texas

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fatally shot a driver in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, marking the second deadly shooting involving immigration enforcement officers in less than a week.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an ICE officer opened fire after the driver attempted to flee during a vehicle stop linked to a deportation investigation. However, the agency provided few details on what threat the driver posed. Immigration advocates identified the victim as a 26-year-old Colombian man who was legally authorized to work in the US, though officials have not confirmed his identity.

The incident has intensified criticism over the Trump administration’s expanded deportation campaign, with immigration advocates questioning the use of deadly force. At least seven people have been killed during immigration enforcement operations since January 2025, according to reports.

The shooting sparked protests in Maine, with demonstrators calling for greater accountability and an end to aggressive ICE operations. Authorities, including the FBI and local police, are investigating the incident.
