US-Canada trade war deepens, raising costs on both sides

Canada has announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs and a CAD $5.4 billion relief package after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that retaliatory levies targeting U.S. steel, aluminum, dairy, and appliances will take effect September 8, rejecting last-minute Washington demands that threatened Canadian economic sovereignty. As President Donald Trump threatens further duties on Canadian automobiles and critical supply chains, key provincial leaders have signaled readiness to leverage Canada’s vital export position in energy and critical minerals if relations deteriorate further.
