The United States has imposed a ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian imports, including alcoholic drinks, dairy products and motorcycles. The measures took effect Tuesday and are expected to have a relatively limited impact on the roughly $880 billion in annual trade between the two countries. However, they add to growing trade tensions between the long-time trading partners.
The ban covers an estimated $967 million in Canadian goods, with alcoholic beverages making up about 87 percent of the total. The dispute has continued to escalate, including U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of American products, as well as additional duties on some U.S. steel and aluminum.
