US and Iran sign ceasefire agreement, details remain unclear

The United States and Iran have signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict in the Gulf, though both sides say a permanent peace agreement still needs to be negotiated.

US President Donald Trump announced that the deal had been signed and said a formal signing ceremony would take place in Geneva on Friday. Vice President JD Vance described the document as a brief, general agreement that includes significant sanctions relief for Iran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called the MoU an important step toward ending the fighting, while emphasizing that negotiations on a lasting truce are still ahead. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the first round of talks on a final agreement will begin after Friday’s ceremony.

The agreement is expected to extend the current ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for discussions on more difficult issues, including Iran’s nuclear program. However, disagreements remain over regional security issues, particularly the conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Analysts say the success of the agreement will depend on whether all parties can maintain stability and reach consensus on these unresolved issues.
