Social media users on China’s Xiaohongshu, or RedNote, have seen an influx of English content as U.S. “TikTok refugees” join the platform due to the looming TikTok ban. RedNote became the most downloaded free app in the U.S., with over 109,000 posts under the hashtag “TikTokRefugee.” New users post pets and memes to connect with Chinese users, who warmly welcome them and share content rules.
RedNote appeals to these users for its established popularity, lack of regional restrictions, and as a symbolic protest against the ban. However, the app may face scrutiny from U.S. and Chinese authorities. The migration could end if TikTok’s ban is lifted by January 19.
