The UN Security Council met on Sunday to address recent U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites. Russia, China, and Pakistan proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged swift action to halt fighting and resume serious negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
China and Russia strongly condemned the U.S. strikes, calling them violations of international law and Iran’s sovereignty. Russia compared the situation to the 2003 Iraq invasion, criticizing U.S. claims as misleading. Iran’s UN envoy accused the U.S. and Israel of undermining diplomacy and misusing the nuclear non-proliferation treaty to justify aggression.
Israel’s representative praised the U.S. action as necessary defense against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, while France and the UK emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions and de-escalation to maintain regional stability. The Security Council has yet to schedule a vote on the proposed resolution, which requires nine affirmative votes and no vetoes by the permanent members to pass.
