UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on escalating Lebanon conflict

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Monday at the request of France as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified, raising fears of a wider regional conflict and complicating ongoing US-Iran diplomatic efforts.

During the meeting, Lebanon’s representative, Ahmad Arafa, accused Israel of escalating military operations and targeting civilian infrastructure, while Israel’s ambassador, Danny Danon, defended the actions as a response to Hezbollah attacks and accused Iran of using Hezbollah as a proxy force against Israel.

Representing the United States, Michael Waltz highlighted diplomatic efforts led by Donald Trump and said peace would be possible if Hezbollah halted its attacks. China’s UN ambassador, Fu Cong, called on Israel to immediately cease hostilities and respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

France’s representative, Jerome Bonnafont, acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense but argued that the scale of its military operations in Lebanon was unjustified and inconsistent with the April ceasefire agreement.

The latest escalation has also affected diplomacy between Washington and Tehran. Iranian media reported that indirect contacts with the United States had been suspended until Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon stop, although Trump later stated that talks with Iran were continuing rapidly.
