UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the UN Charter is under unprecedented threat as the organization marked the 80th anniversary of its signing. He criticized countries for selectively following the Charter, emphasizing that it is not optional but the foundation of global relations.
Guterres urged all 193 member states to uphold the Charter’s principles through action, not just words, and to recommit to international law. He called for renewed efforts to build a future of peace, justice, and progress. The UN Charter was signed on June 26, 1945, following its adoption at the San Francisco Conference.
