UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged faster action on gender equality as the world marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration. Speaking at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), he warned that women’s rights are under attack, with persistent violence, discrimination, and a 20 percent gender pay gap. He also highlighted the risks of AI enabling online abuse and misogyny.
Guterres called on countries to invest in education, combat violence, and ensure women’s full participation in all sectors. UN officials warned that at the current pace, it could take over a century to end poverty for women. The CSW, running from March 10-21 in New York, is reviewing progress and challenges in achieving gender equality.
