Ukrainian and Russian delegations are set to hold peace talks in Istanbul, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits Ankara for discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine’s delegation includes senior officials from the foreign ministry, defense, military, and intelligence, but said Russia’s delegation details remain unclear. Decisions on the next negotiation steps will follow his meeting with Erdogan.
The talks follow a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin, though he will not attend; Russia will be represented by aide Vladimir Medinsky. Zelenskyy expressed hope of meeting Putin, but the Russian leader has not committed.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed optimism that the Istanbul talks could mark a turning point. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said he might attend the talks on Friday if circumstances allow, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated U.S. support for a peaceful resolution, stating, “There is no military solution” to the conflict. The last round of direct talks in March 2022 failed to reach an agreement.
