Ukraine and Russia gave contrasting reactions to recent U.S.-mediated peace talks held over the weekend. Ukraine expressed cautious optimism, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying draft proposals address most of Kyiv’s demands and describing the framework as solid, though imperfect. He said the talks focus on a 20-point plan, security guarantees involving Europe and the U.S., and Ukraine’s future EU membership.
Russia played down the talks, with the Kremlin saying they do not represent a breakthrough and should be seen as part of an ongoing technical process. Moscow said it would continue to assess proposals, particularly in light of U.S. coordination with Europe and Ukraine.
The United States described the discussions as constructive, while President Donald Trump said talks are underway but offered few details. Divisions were also highlighted within Europe, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the U.S. is focused on a ceasefire while EU leaders remain oriented toward confronting Russia, warning of rising costs and growing public opposition to the conflict.
