The British government released an initial 147-page batch of documents on Peter Mandelson’s 2025 appointment as ambassador to the United States, following parliamentary pressure for transparency. The papers reveal officials had warned Prime Minister Keir Starmer that Mandelson’s links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, continuing after Epstein’s 2008 conviction, posed a “reputational risk.”
The documents show Mandelson stayed at Epstein’s house in 2009 and that government officials expressed unease over the rushed appointment. Internal notes indicate Starmer’s advisers had discussed Mandelson’s connections, with mixed assessments of his answers.
The papers also detail Mandelson’s severance after dismissal, showing he initially sought £547,201 but received £75,000 in total discretionary and legally entitled payments. Mandelson disputes claims he requested excessive severance and maintains he accurately answered questions about Epstein.
Mandelson was arrested on February 23 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and remains under investigation. The disclosures come amid renewed scrutiny after the US Justice Department released Epstein-related files and ongoing police inquiries.
