The UK government and OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, have signed a strategic partnership to boost collaboration on AI security research and explore investment in British AI infrastructure like data centers. The deal may also lead to OpenAI expanding its London office and deploying AI in sectors such as justice, defense, and education.
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized AI’s potential to improve the NHS, boost economic growth, and expand opportunities. The UK plans to invest £1 billion to increase its AI computing power twentyfold over five years.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the UK’s proactive stance on AI, particularly through Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s “AI Opportunities Action Plan,” which aims to establish the UK as a global AI leader. The government estimates AI could boost productivity by 1.5% annually, adding £47 billion to the economy each year over the next decade.
