U.S. Senate passes resolution to rein in Trump’s military actions in Venezuela

The U.S. Senate has advanced a resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s ability to carry out further military actions in Venezuela without congressional approval. The procedural vote passed 52–47, with five Republican senators joining all Democrats in support, and a full Senate vote is expected next week. The resolution would require the withdrawal of U.S. forces from hostilities in or against Venezuela that have not been authorized by Congress, reaffirming Congress’s constitutional role in decisions about war. This action follows a recent large-scale U.S. military strike on January 3, during which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and brought to the United States, prompting widespread international condemnation. President Trump criticized the Senate measure on social media, calling it harmful to national security and attacking the Republican senators who supported it. Supporters of the resolution, including members of both parties, argue it is necessary to prevent a prolonged U.S. military presence in Venezuela and to uphold constitutional limits on presidential power. The resolution faces further hurdles, as it must pass both chambers of Congress and could still be vetoed by Trump, leaving its ultimate outcome uncertain.
