The US Senate again rejected a temporary funding bill, making the federal government shutdown on track to become the longest in history.
The House-approved measure, which would have funded the government through November 21, failed to reach the required 60 votes in the Senate. This prolonged stalemate is causing widespread disruption, impacting aviation, health care, and the food assistance program SNAP, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating billions in economic cost.
Both Republicans and Democrats are trading blame. Democrats are using the vote to pressure Republicans over expiring health care subsidies that could cause premiums to rise by about 30 percent next year. Meanwhile, President Trump reversed an earlier administration plan, stating SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans will only be released once Democrats agree to open the government. Public approval of Congress has dropped significantly, with most Americans disapproving of its handling of the situation.
