Military chiefs from the United States and several European countries presented options Thursday for providing security guarantees to Ukraine, following President Donald Trump’s pledge to support the country under any peace deal. The chiefs from the U.S., Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K., and Ukraine met in Washington, D.C., to develop military plans for consideration by allied national security advisers.
European countries are expected to provide most of the troops, while the U.S. could offer air support, including air defense systems and potentially enforcing a no-fly zone. Some plans would place U.S. forces in command of European troops deployed in Ukraine. Leaders from France, the U.K., and Germany have expressed support for European troop involvement, and planning continues as Washington determines the scope of its role.
